ABB Review: The corporate technical journal

Technology Matters

3rd Quarter, 2011

Further down the distribution chain, an article shows how smart grid technologies can be applied at a distribution level. Stockholm’s Royal Seaport is an urban area in which a number of smart grid technologies are being applied. In this article we highlight the impact of adopting intelligent low voltage equipment. Moving from urban planning to software architecture, we show how ABB is working with methods and tools to make its software sustainable and maintainable. As the functionality of software in products becomes more extensive and sophisticated, the significance of this aspect will increase further.

Oil & Gas

2nd Quarter, 2011

In an interview with Texas state geologist, Professor Scott Tinker, ABB Review takes a more detailed look at some of the challenges and trends faced by the oil and gas industry. The subsequent articles provide examples of ABB technology at work for the industry. Through examples from across the world, we will look at ABB’s offerings such as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) providers, integrated control systems, trends in electrical houses, the separation of oil and water, large adjustable speed drives, getting more information out of process data, and the use of robots in harsh environments.p>

Innovations

1st Quarter, 2011

Technology is a defining aspect of modern society. To fathom how much we depend on individual technologies, we need look no further than the manufacturing processes on which we depend or the power-supply that keeps our lights burning. The extent to which tomorrow’s world will be different from today’s will depend to a significant degree on the technological progress and breakthroughs that will emerge between now and then. Through its research and development labs, ABB is proud to play a central if not defining part in advancing some of the contributing technologies. In this issue of ABB Review, 11 innovations selected from ABB labs across the globe are presented in short articles. Many of these are additionally discussed in greater depth in this, recent and upcoming issues of the journal.
